SignOnLiveChatModerator -  Welcome to today's sports chat about the Padres. Tom Krasovic is running a little late but will join us shortly.

Tom Krasovic -  Hi, sorry I'm late, will get to the questions after a quick poll.

Are you hearing any rumors about Tony Gwynn Jr. being traded to the Padres?
12:09
Tom Krasovic -  No. He's been available, on and off, for more than a year. So I doubt he would be expensive.

Why would the Padres consider a Peavy trade if they only consider the top pitching prospect coming back to be a potential #3?
12:10
Tom Krasovic -

The guy in Double-A also has a pretty good ceiling, but the bottom line here is it would be a move driven by economics. Am not saying it will happen. From what I am hearing, Peavy will be pitching for the Padres on Friday. For what it's worth, a bona fide No. 3 starting pitcher who is getting a relatively low salary has pretty good value.

tom: how does kevin towers have a job. his drafts have been a joke and the jim edmonds and brian giles decisions were a disaster. When the padres have a respectful payroll and have someone who can evaluate talent let me know. the fans are finally showing the padres they will not attend this joke of a product.

Tom Krasovic -

Good track record  on trades. Good people skills.  Farm system has underachieved for most of his tenure. Got to taken ownership into account as well. Upper management turnover  above Towers also has been an issue.  SDP have been under-captitalized for many of those years. No question, though, the farm system has been a disappointment for most of that time. And that's extra critical when you're not going to carry a big or even a medium payroll.

Tom, great work, how realistic is this Peavy trade, it seems like he doesn't want to go to the White Sox?
12:17
Tom Krasovic -  Based on Axelrod's comments that we published this morning, seems like Peavy still prefers to stay in the NL and is holding out hope that the Cubs and SDP can work it out. That's not my opinion, just going on where my reporting took me late last night and this morning. But it's questionable that the Cubs can offer as much as the White Sox in  terms of young pitching.

Front office clearly made a cold calculation that they could slash payroll, put out an inferior product and that they would still get decent crowds. Has recent attendance indicated that they have made not only a bad baseball decision but a bad business one too?
12:19
Tom Krasovic -

You need to differentiate the FO from ownership. Moores told the FO to cut the payroll to about $40 million. Plain and simple. Towers said it point blank in our paper last winter. We were hearing the $40 million number last August. The FO went on the radio and attacked that report, but they probably had to do that. Basically the payroll decision starts with Moores. We reported that Alderson tried to get Moores to keep a $15 million cash call in place that would have allowed for a $55 million payroll and more meat on the bone. No dice.

Corey Brock is reporting that Gwynn Jr. deal is done.
12:21
Tom Krasovic -  That's accurate. Gwynn Jr. will roam Petco Park. Gerut wasn't bad, but Gwynn Jr. should cover a bit more ground.

Since you're saying you've heard that Peavy will be pitching Friday, does that mean that you think or have heard he will veto the trade or that ESPN is wrong about Peavy being asked for approval?
12:27
Tom Krasovic -

As of this morning, Peavy's agent said that Peavy hadn't been asked to approve or veto a trade. The agent's comments suggest Peavy wants more time to think things over.

In your opinion, is Gwynn Jr. a better player than Gerut?
12:28
Tom Krasovic -  Scouts like his defense a little better. Gerut's a more powerful and accomplished hitter who was off to a poor start.

in the 2007 MLB draft, Aaron poreda was selected 2 spots after the padres pick(NICK SCHMIDT), and Porcello from the tigers was selected 4 spots after that padres pick...can you say now that schmidt was a bad pick watching now that porcello's already on a major league roster and the team is trying to trade for Poreda among other prospects?, thanks.
12:30
Tom Krasovic -  Schmidt needed reconstructive elbow surgery less than a year after he was drafted. Looking like a bad draft pick. Worked hard to come back but not off to a good start.
