It's a new day in Rangerland - Day 1 of the John Tortorella Era on the day after Tom Renney is fired. I'm sure everyone has plenty on their mind about what's going on, so let's waste no time and start chatting.

Are you at practice today? What's the atmosphere like?

[Comment From Jonathan]
What the mood after Torts practice this morning?
1:34
I am at practice today, sitting in a media work room that is never this full, so you know something big went down. The on-ice session was about as upbeat as you could hope for, I suppose, some interesting skating drills led by Jim Schoenfeld (follow the leader?) and then some work with the lines. The players seem a little bit of two minds - on one hand, their tails are between their legs a bit because a good guy lost his job over their recent slide. At the same time they're trying to be excited about this change, and calling this a fresh start - "We're zero and zero," were Chris Drury's words.

[Comment From SETH]
OBIE, what were the PP line combos in practice today?
1:36
They didn't work on the power play today - did some skating, then some breakout drills, but no 5 on 4. Torts said he had no idea what the lines were yesterday, so he put together his own from scratch today - that included a top line of Scott Gomez centering Markus Naslund and Nik Zherdev.

At what point will Dolan finally realize this team needs a change at the top as much as a new coach and players?

[Comment From Chris Sec 341]
What will it take to get Sather fired? A lawsuit?
1:40
I guess I have to admit, Jim Dolan doesn't confide in me much. That may not surprise you. I can't say what the criteria are for the Garden to decide Sather has had enough - I guess you could say that missing the playoffs this season, a real possibilty, would cause some serious assessment at the top levels.

[Comment From Anthony]
Was Tortorella, Sather's first choice?
1:42
Yes. He said others were in consideration (he wouldn't elaborate), but Torts was the guy they had targeted from the start, and once that was the case, it was a slam dunk the other way - this is a job Tortorella has wanted for years and years, ever since he was an assistant here, and working at TSN he was dying to get back into coaching.

[Comment From Lou]
Does Sather know what he got himself into? Does he realize that when Redden, Kalinin and Rozy play terrible that Torts will bench them, completely undermining Sather's decision to sign and/or re-sign each player? Torts is the first coach hired by Slats that has a mouth!
1:45
I'm guessing Sather does know what he got himself into. In making this change, he wanted to bring in a personality with more fire into the room, and when that means showing certain players a seat in the press box, then that's what will happen. I wouldn't expect Tortorella to come in and start throwing chairs around on the first day, but he'll take action where he sees fit. And you're right, it's a new character under Sather and a departure from his usual tack of bringing in guys he knows and has experience with.

Love your comment about this team being leader-less and directionless. Wasnt that Drury's job? What happened to Capt Clutch, and that other drivel we heard?
1:49
That was and is Drury's job, and he hasn't done it well enough. It was no secret when he was named captain that he's a soft-spoken, lead-by-example guy, and that he wasn't going to be the firebrand in the room, but with the team in a tailspin, no one seemed to be grabbing hold and making others follow. (Brandon Dubinsky, maybe at times, but he's in his second year in the league.) A lot of that falls on the captain.

Do you think Drury will lose his "C"?
1:50
Right now I don't see that, if for no other reason than, who do you want to give it to?

[Comment From Frank]
this team has only showed mild emotional strength and fight this season. the way i see it, they could either get a spark of energy and toughen up with torts, or completely flail and lose self-confidence with his in-your-face mentality. you're close to the team, which do you believe is most likely to happen?
1:53
There's going to be a spark of energy for sure, especially in the early going (even while there is sure to be a period of adjustment in the change from Renney's system to Tortorella's attack style). I think a little spark is something this team could use, but changing the coach doesn't change the roster, and the roster is still flawed.
