Jason Sobel's Tour Championship Round 1 Live Blog

Kevin Maguire, ESPN.com -  Jason Sobel's live blog from the opening round of the Tour Championship will begin momentarily.

@JasonSobel -

Back by unpopular demand – or is it popular remand? – welcome to the latest edition of the Live Blog.

I’m here at beautiful East Lake Golf Club, site of the Tour Championship, which will begin shortly with Jerry Kelly and John Senden hitting the first tee shots at exactly 11:45 a.m. local time.

Just a few days ago, we were stressing the “Lake” in the venue name, with much of this course under water due to recent storms, but the grounds crew has done an amazing job. Really, you wouldn’t even know there was any rain a few days ago, let alone major flooding.

Of course, the tourney itself is only part of the story this week, as its role as the final FedEx Cup playoff event really takes precedent. Lots of topics and issues to discuss throughout the day, including improving the current format, so comment here on this page or through JasonSobel at Twitter to join in. You may now swing away …

@JasonSobel -  First poll of the week has now been posted. I'll be interested to see what you collectively think of the FedEx Cup.

Me? Well, you can read my column from Wednesday to get a good sense of how I feel about it. (For those extra lazy readers, just skip to the fourth paragraph.)

We're now in Year 3 of the playoffs and there have been tweaks each time. I have to imagine some more will be in place for 2010.

I've received some good ideas through e-mail over the past 24 hours, about the points system, the schedule and the format itself. Anyone else have some to share?

Jason, are the boys playing lift clean and place today?
11:29
@JasonSobel -  First comment of the week. Let's keep 'em coming.

Nope, no lift, clean and cheat -- er, place -- today. That will be the case throughout the weekend, as long as we don't receive any more rain.

Forecast is calling for some possible thunderstorms in the area at times, but nothing like this place received Monday and before. I don't expect the weather to be much of an issue.
11:34
@JasonSobel -  Getting a lot of comments about the potential of the PGA Tour trying to make the playoff finale a match play contest.

Never gonna happen.

Match play is like a blind date. Sure, you may find "the one," but chances are you'll wind up alone and depressed in the end.

And really, it's hardly the best way to crown a season-long -- or more to the point, month-long -- champion.
11:35
@JasonSobel -  There was supposed to be a flyover right before the first tee time at 11:45.

Well, it just happened. And I missed it.

Since when do flights take off BEFORE their scheduled departure?

Jason, do you view Tiger's comments re: $10M less than status of a Major as a slap in the face of the PGA?
11:39
@JasonSobel -  Not at all. This was never supposed to be bigger than a major. That wasn't the point.

Remember: The four majors are run by, in order, Augusta National, the USGA, the R&A and the PGA of America. The PGA Tour needed a crown jewel of its own and while the Players Championship is a cool tournament, the FedEx Cup now fits that bill.

But this was never supposed to replace the majors or take priority over them. Think of European soccer leagues. There is the season-long schedule, but intertwined are other tourneys and events. Just because one exists doesn't lessen the importance of another.

Harig's column spent a lot of time discussing the possibility of a Furyk or Harrington victory without winning any tournaments all year. Do you think an additional tweak should require the Cup winner to have won earlier in the year?
