Amalagamating two schools
Decisions re Building, infrastructure, curriculum, community and staff

Staff want comp labs, was that the best use of funding? probably not,

ICT did not become a focus point in 2004
9:30
Suz Arnott -  school opened - no ICT, had been left on backburner

9:31
Suz Arnott -  two staff groups from very different ICT use backgrounds
Limited skill transference - an ICT specialist who provided the knowledge, didn't share it
9:32
Suz Arnott -  biggest turn off with using   IC technologies is when they fail
9:33
Suz Arnott -  equipment in schools and knowledge of staff very limited in some cases
9:38
Suz Arnott -  What did they need to move forward with the use of ICT?
  • appropriate Professional learning (starting with very basic stuff)
  • mentoring - used to support others in the school when things didn't go right
  • support
  • time
Leadership group felt is was an area which needed development, as it could value add to the teaching and learning across the school
9:44
Suz Arnott -  Leadership team develops plan on where they will head with ICT
  • policies
  • vision
  • whole school focus on learning and teaching and school improvement
  • robust and reliable infrastructure (this is so important - haven't got the time to muck around with something that won't work
  • trust
  • "right to fail" - means you are on the edge, trying new things innovative approaches. although learn from your mistakes and move on from those areas which don't work
9:46
Suz Arnott -  support for what teachers are going to do, and what they are going to do with it -
budget requirements are flexible on request.
9:50
Suz Arnott -  What they did -

  • liased for more funding to purchase newer hardware
  • Notebooks for teachers - teachers became more confident with the technology
  • professional learning for all staff. Action based and relevant - starting with basics - using cameras etc to build confidence. PD linked to school improvement plan, linked to ICT
  • ICT competency framework
  • develop a reflective culture
9:52
Suz Arnott -  reflective tool for performance management

when new tools came in - they were passed on to other staff members to develop engagement - explored and reviewed, and presented back to staff by that staff member

9:54
Suz Arnott -  Perfomance management - reflective conversations about growth
9:58
Suz Arnott -
  • identified in-house expertise - release to staff to provide the support/mentoring/modelling/transferring skills
  • "went with the winners" focussed on those "doing innovative things"
  • used student expertise - applied and peer tutors, supported teachers in the classroom. they became "webmasters"
  • trained up support staff
  • acknowledged good practice at assemblies, staf fmeetings etc - positive reinforcement - staff began to showcase their students successes, and using technology. Reflected and praised in a fun way
  • part of the performance management process
