The Twilight Saga: New Moon

1:00
Erika Nunez -  Welcome everyone! We’re here to discuss the film New Moon, based on the second novel of Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight series. We’ve got a full room here with Joy Tipping, Nancy Churnin, Annabel Hoffman and her daughter Meredith, Samantha Urban, Anthony Williams and myself.
1:02
Erika Nunez -  A bit of a warning. There may be a few spoilers in the next hour.
1:03
Joy Tipping -  OK, I'll start off by saying that even though I thought the movie was, to be polite, horrid, I must admit that the whole "Twilight" phenomenon is strangely hypnotic. I'm wearing New Moon jewelry even as we speak, and I bought my husband a "Real Men Don't Sparkle" t-shirt yesterday. And even though I didn't like "New Moon," I'm quite sure I'll end up watching it again before "Eclipse" comes out. And, eternal (hah!) optimist that I am, I hold out vast hope that "Eclipse" will be fabulous.

Erika Nunez -  Read Joy's review of the film here.

Samantha Urban -  Joy's right. Anyone who's read quality literature can tell that "Twilight" is fluffy fun, but not exactly substantial or even "good" by most standards - but something about this franchise keeps sucking me in.
1:06
Samantha Urban -  Although, I'll say that the intensity of the fans can be frightening. Just check the comments on Joy's review or my blog post. Calm down, Twihards!
1:07
Nancy Churnin -  Joy, I have to admit that I did like it more than you do (well, it's not hard to like it more than you do)! But from a parenting perspective, what intrigued me the most was how strong the message about chastity was. Even more than last time I felt that the movie used vampires and werewolves were metaphors for dangerous sexuality -- a sense that adolescent boys, even (or especially?) when they're in love,  can't be trusted. Did that strike anyone else this way?
1:07
Joy Tipping -  Oh, I also bought some of that new "Twilight" makeup this weekend, Twilight Venom, but I consoled myself that it's just a version of something I already use, DuWop's Lip Venom. Saw LOTS of teenage girls at the mall wearing their Team Jacob or Team Edward shirts.
1:09
Anthony Williams -  Nancy I think that's one of the most interesting aspects about it. It's not just a tamer version of HBO's True Blood, it's all about being careful around boys, in a sense.
1:09
Joy Tipping -  Well, from personal experience (both my own and from watching my three teenage boys grow up), I can attest to that: Teenage boys cannot be trusted. So I will agree that the Twilight books and movies do put and interesting spin on that. But I'm sorry -- I expect my vampires to be sexy and bloody. They're VAMPIRES. I'm a huge True Blood fan.
