American Idol chat with Joanna Weiss

10:00
Joanna -  Good morning, everybody!

Why was last night different from all other nights? On all other nights we watch according to the alloted time, but last night we DVR for an extra 5 minutes. What was Allison wearing? It wasn't kosher. Happy Pesach.
10:00
Joanna -  Happy Pesach to you, too, jkstraw. I'm sure that's exactly what Fox was intending last night.

Judges a little more direct last night. Are they reacting to public perception that they are too Switzerland? My guitar gently weeped when it heard Kris and Scott a-strumming.
10:01
Joanna -  Scott's guitar playing was especially extraneous, no? If he would only just sit on a stool or something...
10:02
Joanna -  And, I don't know - maybe the judges were prepped by the producers to keep it shorter. (Didn't work.) Or maybe they're charged up by all of the audience booing - which seems longer and louder this year.

Morning Joanna. You'd think after 8 seasons, the producers would figure out how to better balance the shows. I think its really crappy that a) the last 2 contestants get shafted with comments, and b) people's tivo's cut out becuase the show runs over. The judges need to learn to keep it short and sweet and STFU! Seriously!
10:03
Joanna -  Well, we've talked about the final contestants...I still don't think a lack of judges' comments really hurts them. (Simon's standing O spoke volumes, don't you think?) The DVR stuff is quite obnoxious, though. I will, as one commenter pointed out, have to DVR Fringe from now on.

I think Scott needed to be out front. People needed to compare him fairly to the other contestants. He is just not as good.
10:03
Joanna -  The way he's been coddled is quite insulting, if you ask me. He seems so nice, but so in over his head.

[Comment From BSteve]
Hearing Adam's performance last night made me go back and listen to the Tears for Fears original — and Tears for Fears suffered badly by the comparison. How much do you think Adam's numbers will be hurt by having had his performance (and his dial-in number) run past the normal hour time slot? And will the judges use their save for him if necessary?
10:04
Joanna -  The judges would absolutely save him, but I don't think they'll have to. I think rabid Adam fans can extrapolate his number -- it's just 1-888-whatever-08, as there's no phone-sex-line problem at this point.

[Comment From Ngentle]
Joanna, we know you're a big fan of Adam. Can you explain why his song was "amazing" last night and earned a standing O from Simon. I don't get it at all.
10:06
Joanna -  I've said this before about Adam, Ngentle: More than anyone I've ever seen on "Idol" before, he is absolutely, completely in control of his performances. It's not just the notes, but the way he commands the stage when he's singing, and the way he seems to make a smart choice every week about which song to sing to showcase his voice, and what to do to mix things up. (Fast sometimes, slow sometimes, etc.) Where other contestants falter, he knows precisely what to do.

dialidol has Kris down at the bottom - I'll be REALLY bummed out if he goes over Scott and/or Lil. Then again, the judges MIGHT save him because they know he's good but he just had an off night.
10:07
Joanna -  It's possible that the judges would help Kris, since they're running out of weeks to use their veto. I really don't think they'll need it for Adam or Danny. But there's also a chance they'd reserve it for Allison, who is most likely to need it - and is, let's face it, better than Kris.

I think I'm finally coming over to the dark side with Adam. I can't get the song out of my head. My question is , wasn't Kris' performance a reason why "singing from the year you were born" is silly - he clearly didn't get that the Don Henley song is dark and a comment on youth's apathy, yet he sang it like a silly pop song?
10:09
Joanna -  Welcome to the dark side! May the force be with you. As for Kris...I think it's the specific song choice rather than the theme. He could just as easily have misinterpreted a country song. But you're right, he definitely missed the point of the song. I was surprised, since he's played this show so smart thus far. Or was he just lucky? Am I overestimating him?

[Comment From KM]
Kris had the curse of the weird side-staging and overwhelming horn section. Scott just need to be at home watching it on tv likethe rest of us. My ears still bleeding from those high notes!
10:09
Joanna -  Yeah, it was painful at times. And I think they need to end this play-in-the-mosh pit experiment, since it has failed twice now.
